Researchers have discovered a genetic mutation that allows some people to remain alert and productive on just 4 hours of sleep a night.
In a new study,
researchers have identified a rare genetic mutation called SIK3-N783Y that
allows some people to function well without feeling tired on just 4 to 6 hours
of sleep per night.
A genetic
mutation called SIK3-N783Y is one of the factors that researchers have linked
to shorter sleep patterns, according to a study by researchers at the
University of California, Berkeley, published in the journal PNAS. They tested the mutation in laboratory mice and found that mice carrying
the rare change slept less than others and still performed well.
According to the
results of this study, mice with this mutation sleep an average of about 31
minutes less than normal mice, and after a period of sleep
deprivation, this difference increases to 54 minutes.
